Ian Gaddes - Owner & Head Coach

  • Qualified Strength and Conditioning Coach

  • CrossFit level 1

  • British Weightlifting Level 1

  • British Weightlifting Level 2

Originally from Gore, Southland, I grew up loving Rugby and got myself involved in most sports as a kid. I stumbled across CrossFit in 2012 when I applied for a 3-year position as a Strength and Conditioning Apprentice on the Isle of Man. I studied under Physiotherapist and Coach, Erin Bonett and her husband, Strength and Conditioning coach, Dan Bonett who co-own CrossFit IOM and Fusion Fitness.

In my 3 years at CrossFit IOM, I delivered over 3000 hours of coaching sessions. I have seen people transform both psychologically and physically. I’ve watched a 20 stone man learn to skip. I’ve seen a woman in her 60s string together 5 strict pull ups. I’ve seen a skinny teenage boy turn into a British Weightlifting Competitor. I’ve seen pregnant women train up to their due dates and then regain their fitness after giving birth in a matter of weeks. For me, the best bit about CrossFit is that it works. And it works for everyone - all ages and all walks of life.

Doing CrossFit is like giving your car a regular service and maintaining the parts so it doesn’t crap out when it gets old. And like an old car, the older we get, the more servicing we need. The idea that old people need to rest up is ludicrous. It’s the opposite. CrossFit will allow you to be a better functioning, more mobile and stronger human for as long as you keep it up.

Sam Gaddes - Owner & Coach

  • CrossFit Level 1 Trainer

I started CrossFit in 2012 after Ian began his Strength and Conditioning Apprenticeship at CrossFit IOM. I was hooked from day one. I have always kept fit and loved any sort of physical challenge. I discovered running at the age of 18 and stuck at it for 14 years. I ran marathons, half marathons, 10ks, 5ks and cross country. I also represented the Isle of Man for running. Heading for my first CrossFit session, I was quietly confident that I’d be good! That was not to be the case. My first workout was deadlifts, burpees and rowing. It sucked. I sucked. It wasn’t running.  Everything I knew about health and fitness was blown out of the water. I learnt very quickly about the real definition of fitness and I have been a die-hard, devoted CrossFitter since. I completed my CrossFit Level 1 Trainer course in 2013 knowing that one day, Ian and I would open our own CrossFit Affiliate. Finally, we are doing it. We are so excited to recreate the wonderful CrossFit Community we were part of on the Isle of Man, here in Golden Bay.

Sam is also a Teacher at Collingwood Area School and teaches Science, Maths and Senior Chemistry.
